Thursday 6th February @ 4.00pm - Suhel Miah
Guest Speaker: Suhel Miah
Target Audience: Primary, Secondary SEND
Suhel is a Home Office approved intervention provider, working directly with young people who are at risk of radicalisation and or extremism. Suhel has spent the last decade working with young people who have come from a complex background, and often identified ‘at risk’ of entering the criminal justice system. Having held the post of Oldham’s Prevent Coordinator he was subsequently recommended by the Greater Manchester counter terrorism unit to become a Home Office approved Intervention Provider, working directly with the UK Home Office and Channel coordinators from across the UK. Suhel has provided interventions to individuals on a one to one basis around extremism, has vast experience working within the governments Prevent agenda and implementing this within a school context.
This workshop is aimed at DSLs of Primary and Secondary schools who work with individuals have a diagnosis of ASD or suspected ASD. Whilst there is no empirical evidence to suggest that individuals with ASD are more likely to offend thank neurotypical individuals, it is nevertheless important to explore the risk factors that may be associated with individuals on the spectrum. The facilitator will give an overview of Autism and potential links to Radicalisation and Extremism. The session will look at specific indicators and risks, providing a framework that categorises each potential scenario and gives ways to deal with these. There will be case studies and examples and a question and answer session at the end.
