About this Event...
Wednesday 16th October @ 4.30pm - Bernie Westacott
Bernie Westacott taught maths in independent prep schools (ages 3 to 13) from 1973 to 2012. He introduced Singapore Maths into his school in 2006. During that time, he also worked with his schoolâs early years staff to develop their own EYFS maths programme. Since retiring from full-time teaching (he still teaches 2 days a week), Bernie has worked as a consultant, both for Oxford University Press and independently. He has also provided Maths CPD abroad, including leading schools in India and South Korea.
Bar models are not just a tool for solving word problems. They are representations of the various mathematical structures, such as aggregation and augmentation for addition (as mentioned in the new NCETM primary CPD resources).
We will use manipulatives to model the key structures/concepts for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and develop their representations as bar models.
We will see how these structures can be recognised in word problems and represented as bar models.
